Today's Discussion is on..National Something Or Other Day!
Part 1 - National Toasted Marshmallow Day
So, I have a calendar in my room that my ex's mother gave to me for a birthday or Christmas and it tells me what the National day is today! I absolutely love it, even though it does bring up some mixed feelings to type about it right now to the public...Anyways! I will probably post many days for us to discuss. This day in particular made me think of my old days in Girl Scouts, camping and of course, the main topic, roasted outdoor treats.
I went from loving S'mores, to disliking them, to loving them again, then to eating only the roasted marshmallow out of them. What do I prefer today? I'm not really sure! It has probably been a good 5+ years since I had a S'more. I will tell you all the stories of my past and the times I remember those sugary good nights.
A long time ago, your girl glimmer was in Girl Scouts. Honestly, I was a pretty good follower and would learn later in life that leading by example is my true calling in life (if only my job recruiters could see what I see in myself as clear as day). We learned a lot in our meetings, like how to fight off bad guys, live in the wilderness, facts about animal life and how to make gimp (why did we waste our time with that last one?). I can't particularly say I remember my camping trips with my troop, but I do remember my two best friends at the time and how outdoorsy they were - we would run around the forest after hours and make up stories about how we were wolves or try to give each other nightmares. Wherever you two ladies are - thanks for the good ol' times (maybe I should hit them up on Facebook and just tell them that...).
I do remember the campsite and how the troop leaders would always shoo you away from the fire. My mother, included. The best part of the campfire was cooking on it and the wonderful smells it would produce. There isn't anything better than the smell of the outdoors, mixed with that earthy leaf smell and wood burning. I remember the silence of us all as we listened to the wood crackle underneath the large orange flames. But, we aren't here to talk about the fireplace. We are here to talk about dessert!
Marshmallows, a Hershey's chocolate bar, a wooden stick, a napkin or two (it was never enough for the mess that was about to unfold on your lap) and two graham crackers. This was all you needed to make the most of your camping trip. That and cheesy Girl Scout songs - but, let's skip over that part. My favorite part from the first time I grabbed a marshmallow and stuck it on a pole, was that first feeling of swinging it into the fire. I love watching it glow against the cracking fire. Also, catching it on fire is super funny and super delicious. I love to get mine super crispy, but I try not to burn it, so it is brown all over - an even coat from the flames. Then, you plop that sucker on the chocolate and graham crackers, making a little sandwich, and you sink your teeth right in! I could never wait - I had to just burn the top of my mouth for all the flavor.
The most recent time I ate a toasted marshmallow was probably like 6 years ago. It was when I first started dating my ex-boyfriend and he had a little mini fire pit/stove in his backyard. My best friend and I roasted marshmallows in it, but it will never be that campfire experience. You need to go to be in a little cot or a tent right after. You need to wake up and do dishes with fresh water pots obtained from a well. You have to hold your little tin cup in your hands as jugs full of sweet lemonade make their way around the logs of campers. Camping is SO amazing. I hope I get to do it again sometime soon.
Sorry if this post was all over the place - I just finished streaming for the night and I'm exhausted! Tomorrow I am having a party for my birthday which is Saturday! Hope to talk to you all soon and have a great (long) weekend!
Love,
glimmer
